We’reDifferentNow

One set of lyrics. Every possible song. The words don’t change. Everything else can.

There is no definitive version.

In June 2020, my father took his own life. No one saw it coming.

I wrote these lyrics on his birthday that November, not knowing what they were for. I’m not a musician. I’m not a poet. I’m just a person who was feeling something and didn’t know how to get it out.

Once the words were out, being a music lover, I used an app to record myself saying them over a simple, repeating piano riff. Good enough.

As AI-generated music matured, I realized I could make endless songs from these lyrics until I found the perfect one. Joke’s on me: there’s no such thing as perfect. There is only “perfect for right here, right now.”

So I made forty different versions of the song. I’ve shared some of my favorites here, but I want to hear yours too. Take the lyrics and make something of them—something that speaks to you. I’ll share selected versions here so maybe they speak to others too.

We can’t bring back the people we love, but we can share their memory through art. And in that, they will live forever.

The music can go anywhere.

The words stay here.

I’m sittin’ here thinking, and I’m wishing, and I’m drinking
hoping that something hits me other than the gin.

I'm outside my skin thinking about what you must have been feeling to take that step,
To lose your breath, to end what began what was yours and yours alone,
but then you shared it. You brought people in, but then you shut them out.

And sometimes I get mad, and I get sad and then I end up somewhere in between
when I feel like I might have an idea of what you were feeling.
Some glimmer, some distant flicker of your emotion, of your fear.
You didn't know how to deal with darkness so you left us here.

And we'll deal, we'll feel, and hell we'll maybe even heal, but we won't ever be the same.
Life doesn't really work that way.

And I can barely say your name.
I can barely see your face.
I can barely breathe some days.

You left a hole in my soul that is the shape of you,
Not the form of your body but the shape of your heart, your soul, your essence, your flow.
You gotta know that what you left behind we can never rewind.
We’ll never be the same.
We won't ever feel the same, ‘cause we're different now.

We're different now.
You're gone, and we're different now.
Everything’s different now.
I'm different now and I don't know if it’s a good thing.
But the one thing I do know is you were a good thing.
Yeah, you were a good thing.

We're different now.
You're gone, and we're different now.
Everything’s different now.
I'm different now and I don't know if it’s a good thing.
But the one thing I do know is you were a good thing.
Yeah, you were a good thing.

Make it
different.
